Susan Jordan’s Assembly District 35 race is winning strong support from public safety personnel. Both the Ventura County Professional Firefighters Association and the Oxnard Firefighters have joined the Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association and Oxnard Police Chief John Crombach in endorsing Jordan.

Jordan’s commitment to public safety is unwavering and her principled, studied and determined approach to working for issues that matter to the district’s citizens has won her praise and endorsements from many corners.

“We support Susan Jordan because she’s not afraid to do the right thing, even if it isn’t the most popular. In her work as an environmental advocate, she always takes public safety into consideration, and Susan will do the same as our Assemblymember,” said Ventura County Professional Firefighters’ Association President Chris Mahon.

“Firefighters support Susan Jordan for Assembly because she has proven herself as a responsible, effective leader who stands by her principles. We can count on her to make sure public safety is the top priority,” said John Albin, President of Oxnard Firefighters, Local 1684.

“Susan is honest, direct and a great communicator. Her record pushing Sacramento to make the tough decisions for the right reasons demonstrates that she is the best candidate, hands down. Now is the time we need representatives like Susan Jordan,” said Matt Findlay, President of the Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association.

Jordan welcomed these endorsements to the growing list of leaders and organizations locally and statewide supporting her race.

“I have tremendous admiration for the work our law enforcement officials do. Every day they risk their lives to protect our communities,” Jordan said. “So I am very deeply honored to receive the support of these key public safety leaders.”

Susan Jordan is an award-winning environmental leader, businesswoman, health advocate and mother with 15 years of experience working to protect California’s coastline as an economic, environmental and recreational resource. As chair of the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission, she was known for her balanced and analytical approach. As an environmental leader statewide, she has taken on large-scale projects which have broad public policy implications, and won.

The California League of Conservation Voters – the non-partisan electoral arm of the environmental conservation movement – endorsed Susan Jordan today.

Jordan, a Democratic candidate for the 35th Assembly District in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, is the co-founder and Director of the California Coastal Protection Network and Vote the Coast. For the past 15 years, Susan has worked with local communities up and down the state to stop illegal projects that threaten our coastal resources and our vibrant tourist and marine economy. And she has won numerous major battles against powerful special interests because of her intelligence, integrity, work ethic and attention to detail.

Most recently Jordan led the charge to defeat the controversial PXP oil project off the Santa Barbara County coast – the secret deal to open up our local waters to new offshore drilling for the first time in decades. She not only led the charge – she’s also the only candidate for Assembly who has consistently opposed the project.

“I’ve worked with Susan to protect our coastline, and I’ve seen firsthand that she has the courage, skills and integrity to stand up to the special interests,” said former State Senator Sheila Kuehl, a nationally-recognized environmental leader who represented coastal Ventura County. “We can count on her to effectively fight for better schools, a cleaner environment and quality health care for all.”

Local residents and conservationists Pierce and Keely Brosnan also voiced their support for Jordan. “Over the last 15 years, Susan has been a tireless environmental leader who has taken on the toughest fights in California and won,” the couple said. “To make sure our environment, our communities and our children are protected, we need Susan in the California legislature now more than ever.”

Jordan is recognized in Santa Barbara, Ventura County and statewide for her advocacy on behalf of environmental causes – protecting our water, our air and our coastline. She has written and advocated for legislation and forged valuable connections with environmental leaders across the state, with members of Congress, the California Senate and Assembly and across party lines.

Jordan is also known for her successful efforts to stop the closure and destruction of state parks, in addition to stopping a poorly-conceived LNG gas terminal from being built off Oxnard, and fighting ongoing illegal pollution from the Halaco facility that was damaging Ormond Beach.

Susan Jordan is also endorsed by Assemblymember Pedro Nava, widely recognized as one of the Legislature’s most effective environmental leaders. Jordan met Nava while they were both were fighting to protect the environment, and subsequently they married in 2002.

Jordan expressed her admiration for Broidy’s many contributions to Democratic goals. “Sue’s steady leadership and wisdom has been invaluable. She has been a true friend and her presence will be missed by everyone in the Party.”

“Susan Jordan is the type of Democrat we need in the Assembly,” Bass said. “She has proven that she sticks to her principles and Democratic values — and she wins the tough battles against the special interests and Governor Schwarzenegger. Susan Jordan is a champion for our public schools, our coastline and health care for all.”

Speaker Bass is the first African-American woman to lead a house of a state legislature and the first Democratic woman to lead the Assembly. Currently only 20 of 80 seats in the Assembly are held by women and five are termed out.

“Speaker Bass has been a champion for the most vulnerable in our society,” Jordan said. “She has been a leader in making sure those without a voice are heard. She has also worked very hard to retain and create new jobs in our state and make sure educational opportunities are available for all.”

“Bass is also not afraid to stand up to our Governor when she feels he is not working in the best interest of the people,” Jordan added. “Her leadership and courage is an inspiration to me and her endorsement is a great honor.”

Jordan said she is also impressed with Bass’ 47th Assembly District People’s Council, a group made up of representatives from the education, environment, small business and health communities. “This kind of constituent outreach is exactly what I will do within my district when elected.”

Regarding the misleading mailer by Alexandra Gallardo-Rooker, member of the California Democratic Party:

I am deeply saddened that Gallardo-Rooker, who has endorsed my opponent in the Democratic primary, would under the guise of providing information, deliberately mislead voters into thinking I was a Republican campaign strategist. Nothing is further from the truth. This is just another in a series of misleading and baseless attacks by my opponent and his campaign consultants.

My resume is perfectly clear, and my support of Democratic candidates, causes and values is unwavering.

In 1980, in my 30s, I began as a commercial market research analyst at a consulting firm. I worked in the business division doing commercial research and strategic development for groups like St. Lukes Hospital Center, the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Museum of Modern Art, and Home Box Office. I conducted over 250 market research studies for companies across the United States. I did not, at any time, during the 14 years I was with the firm work on any political campaigns for Democratic or Republican candidates.

When I joined the firm, all of the principals were Democrats and I was proud to be associated with the firm that ran Bill Clinton’s campaign for Governor of Arkansas and represented strong progressive Democratic leaders like Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. The Rooker piece deliberately omitted information from the resume she cited that clearly stated that I only did business research and consulting – not political campaigns.

In 1996, I co-founded Vote the Coast and since that time have volunteered to elect strong Democratic candidates up and down the state including Debra Bowen, Hannah-Beth Jackson, and Alan Lowenthal. In 2004, I served as a top environmental advisor to former State Treasurer Phil Angelides’ campaign for Governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I am proud that, unlike my opponents, Democrat or Republican, I have had the benefit of a strong career in business so I can tackle the problems California faces in restoring its economy and bringing jobs back to California. I know what it means to be responsible for a payroll, ensuring workers have health benefits, and paying a decent wage.

I look forward to a vigorous campaign on the issues. I hope my opponent changes course and decides to do the same.

LOS ANGELES -- Nearly two years ago, a broad coalition of environmental groups celebrated a deal with a Texas oil company that promised to eventually end its drilling operations off California's scenic Santa Barbara County coast.

Now, a growing number of those former eco allies are lining up against the plan, in part because no one outside a small circle of supporters was allowed to read the final agreement.

Many also wonder if the 2022 end date for drilling is enforceable and worry the deal with Plains Exploration & Production, known as PXP, could inadvertently end a 40-year moratorium on new offshore drilling along the entire California coast.

About 110 groups have joined the "Oppose PXP Coalition." Among its members is the Sierra Club, which initially endorsed the deal and was still listed as a supporter on the PXP Web site long after the group changed its position. The company has used the roster of environmental backers to win public support for the proposal.

"It's very frustrating," said Michael Endicott of the Sierra Club. "I asked them to do it last year. Stop saying Sierra Club is in support of the project - we're not." For more...

First-time candidate Susan Jordan has once again proven her tremendous grassroots support by raising $224,000 for her campaign for the 35th Assembly District seat in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

“I’m honored that hundreds of regular citizens have contributed to my campaign -- $10, $25, $50 and some even more,” Jordan noted. “Most of the contributions are local, but I’m also proud that environmentalists and environmental groups from up and down the coast also donated.”

First-time candidate Susan Jordan has once again proven her tremendous grassroots support by raising $224,000 for her campaign for the 35th Assembly District seat in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

“I’m honored that hundreds of regular citizens have contributed to my campaign — $10, $25, $50 and some even more,” Jordan noted. “Most of the contributions are local, but I’m also proud that environmentalists and environmental groups from up and down the coast also donated.”

Among her larger contributors are the National Women’s Political Caucus and the Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, who each contributed $2,000.

Jordan, who is Executive Director of the non-profit California Coastal Protection Network, is running for the 35th Assembly District against two longtime politicians and perennial candidates: Santa Barbara City Councilmember Das Williams and former Santa Barbara County Supervisor Michael Stoker. Williams has run for three different offices four times in the past six years.

“I’m used to taking on well-oiled political machines and beating them with grassroots efforts,” Jordan said, noting that she has led successful fights against huge corporations including Texas-based oil company Plains Exploration & Production, Co. (PXP)

“They might raise more money, but the voters are tired of politics as usual. I’m raising the money my campaign needs to help get my message out, but I’m also spending time meeting voters. Some of these folks, like my friend, Bonnie — an in-home supportive care worker with a disabled son — desperately need an advocate in Sacramento but can’t possibly make a contribution.”

Almost half of Jordan’s donors contributed $100 or less.

“I’ve been warned to expect that big oil companies will spend big money against me to help my opponents – simply because of my outspoken opposition to the secret PXP oil-drilling deal and my advocacy for an oil severance tax,” Jordan continued. “The voters of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties are too smart to be fooled by the big-money politics.”

Susan Jordan is an award-winning environmental leader, businesswoman, health advocate, mother and former chair of the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission.
